The Narodniks (late 19th century)
The Narodniks (“populists” – “or to the people”) were a revolutionary movement formed by the Russian intelligentsia in the late 19th century; the group looked to the peasantry for its support.
Although the Narodniks were not a genuinely Marxist current, their representatives were influenced by Marx and shaped the early reception of his works in Russia. The correspondence between Marx and Vera Ivanovna Zasulich, an author and politician counted among the Narodniks, are attributed an importance that extended beyond this period.
